Thanks it's Rented! Clothing Rentals Explained

Rent It! Why Clothing Rental is the new black

You could can always argue that fashion rental is more of a guilt-free way of consumerism. But we say its a way of stopping clothing from going to landfill and staying in circulation for generations if not years. With the premise of 'hand me downs' being the idea the aim to keep circulating for years to come. Thus being the 'new black'

Fast fashion is so last season, why not be on-trend while being sustainable by renting clothes? To us it seems like a no brainer and will slow down the process of clothing going to landfil or becoming dead-stock. Plus if you are renting a madia & Matilda dress it has been a previous garment or end of line fabric, so you can feel fantastic knowing you are putting out; only good vibes to the world instead of waste!

Having the privilege of being able to wear contemporary outfits for any special occasion without

suffocating your wardrobe and the environment is the dream.

Did you know that the continual drive of Fast Fashion contributes to about a staggering 10,000 items

of clothing being sent to landfills every five minutes? And about 35% of ocean microplastic pollution

is from Fast Fashion. According to the Institute of Sustainable Communication, the fashion industry

is the second-largest clean water polluter in the world. Would you want to contribute to this crime?

Discover our exciting subscription of rental clothes to expand your style horizon and put a stop to

Fast Fashion for only £65 per month.

How it works; you can stock up to 10 items within your virtual dreamy closet. Then we will send you

3 pieces from your closet that you will be able to wear for a whole month. After you make memories

with your items, they must be returned together before the next shipment. You will then receive 3

new items in your virtual closet.

New in Autumn

Autumn is approaching faster than any of us anticipated. This means your summer wear won’t be appropriate for the upcoming weather. Which is why you’re here! Looking for something new and suitable for Autumn’s breeze.

If this is your first time discovering Madia & Matilda, we are a brand dedicated to producing sustainable garments. We are focused on zero waste, hand crafted, ethical women's wear. With that in mind you are just in time for their new product arrivals.

New In Store

The Lounge Suit

Lounge wear has become a popular outfit choice over the Covid years. It’s cosy inside and outside the house. Perfect for running those daily duties! So, why not try it out? This lounge suit is comfortable, breathable and ideal for the upcoming weather change.

Lounge Suit

Slim Cut Trousers

Shorts are just not enough to keep you warm. So, it’s time to ditch them and bring out some trousers. How about checking out these essential ankle length slim fit trousers. Designed to fit your body type! It’s also a great essential.

Slim Cut Trousers

Polo Neck Polo neck tops and sweaters have always been in fashion during this time of the year. So, how about you check out our simple jersey top, with long sleeves and a ruched polo neck. A choice for day-to-day wear.

Polo Neck Top

Cotton Coats

During this season, the first thing people tend to gravitate towards are coats. We now have a new range of up-cycled wool coals

In recent years the coat in fashion seems to be Puffer Coats or Jackets. The coats and jackets are usually padded, filled with down feathers. The outer layer is usually synthetic fiber such as nylon or polyester. Now, that’s not very Eco-friendly. You can come across ethical coats; therefore we would suggest researching and considering the best option; why not try out coats that are made with organic cotton, lyocell or soy fabric.

Organic Cotton Jacket

Jumpers/Sweaters

Jumpers are traditionally made out of wool but can also now be made up of cotton, synthetic fibres, or any combinations of what has been mentioned. Ignore the synthetic fibre and you’ve got yourself some non polluting jumpers!

Wool is one of the oldest high-performing, sustainable materials around. It has several reliable attributes, such as: rapidly renewable, biodegradable, recyclable and can be produced organically. So, a good old woolly jumper doesn’t seem to go out of fashion during this time of the year.

Got any old jumpers lying about? Here's a suggestion! How about fixing them up? Repairing old jumpers, or even combining two into one. Recycling is becoming apart of everyone's daily life, so why not give it a go with worn out clothes.

Why shopping is a powerful mode of activism:

At Madia & Matilda, we recognize that a sustainable lifestyle is not restricted to the clothing that you wear. Therefore, we are actively expanding our product range to include ethically-sourced, zero-waste home wear, cosmetics and food. By doing so, we are providing a single platform to support your personal Eco-conscious journey.

About Curated Brands?

To fulfill your needs without comprising those of future generations, you must adopt a zero-waste mindset which will inform your everyday choices. Vegan, organic, recyclable and refillable options will enable you to live with a reduced environmental impact. As such products become more accessible and easily purchased through the Madia & Matilda website, we look forward to growing our community of conscious consumers.

Vegan Products

All products sold by Madia & Matilda are sourced from cruelty-free, sustainable brands, including small independent and local retailers. We only partner with retailers which meet our strict environmental and social criteria. Investing money into ethical businesses funds and supports the development of the ethical practices which are necessary to prevent further social and environmental damage. As consumption is the underlying cause of land, air and water pollution, changing the way you shop is a powerful mode of activism.

Accessories

In order to minimize our supply chains carbon footprint, we look to partner with brands which offer drop-shipping services. Instead of receiving and holding stock from organisations, we ask retailers to send products direct to our customers to avoid unnecessary travel-induced carbon emissions. Drop-shipping also allows the price of products to remain a true reflection of their value, without incorporating additional transportation charges.

How to have a more sustainable summer:

Leah - Wrap Top

Throughout the summer, an abundance of time is spent in nature. Although the sunshine offers positive physical and mental health benefits, action must be taken to prevent an unhealthy rise in global surface temperatures. A sustainable summer can be achieved, by engaging in easy zero-waste habits and participating in enjoyable activities.

Paper Straws - Home

1.      Always carry a re-usable bottle

Over 7.7 billion plastic bottles are used, within the UK each year [Water UK, 2018]. Single-use plastics accumulate either in landfill where they release greenhouse gases as they decompose or within marine environments where they are ingested by/cause harm to life underwater. Approximately 340 million plastic bottles would be saved by an individual, by carrying a refillable water bottle. Therefore, as temperatures rise, a refillable water bottle is essential for remaining hydrated without harming the planet.

2.      Eat seasonal fruit and vegetables

Over one third of fresh products is imported from climate-vulnerable countries into the UK. Transporting fresh produce thousands of miles across the world generates a mass volume of greenhouse gases which accelerate global warming. Seasonal fruit and vegetables grown locally are fresher, healthier, more tasty and have a lower carbon footprint that others imported out-of-season.

Accessories - Curated Brands

3.      Purchase reef-safe sun protection

Conventional sun-creams often contain oxybenzone, octocrylene and octinoxate which disrupt hormones and eventually enter oceans once washed of human skin. over 14,000 tons of toxic sunscreen enter the ocean each year; bleaching coral reefs and poisoning marine life [Molvar, 2018]. When purchasing sun protection, look for reef-safe formulas that do not contain oxybenzone, octocrylene and octinoxate.

4.        Ditch the car; walk, run or cycle in the sunshine

The transport industry consumes the largest amount of carbon (through petroleum) and emits the highest volume of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. Travelling by foot or by bike generates zero carbon emissions and therefore are two simple forms of climate activism. Walking and cycling are also proven to have physical and psychological health benefits which may be noticed with only 30 minutes of either being performed 5 days a week.

5.      Ditch or thrift summer trends

New fashion trends emerge with the launch of spring/summer collections. Each year, the same products re-enter stores in new colours or slightly-altered silhouettes. As the fashion industry was coined the second most polluting, refusing to engage in short-lived trends will help to reduce the volume of low-quality, disposable garments eventually entering landfill. The key to a gorgeous and sustainable summer wardrobe, it to re-wear and love items already in your wardrobe. However, if you do fancy purchasing something new for the season, shop at ethical boutiques (including Madia & Matilda) or second-hand stores.

Mel - Tunic Dress

6.      Dry clothing naturally/ on the line

Drying clothing outside requires zero energy and will prevent fabric damages occurring within a tumble-drying machine. If you do not have access to an outdoors space, clothing may be hung inside on (bathroom/ bedroom/kitchen) rails above a towel.

7.      Plan a staycation

Aviation is the most carbon-intensive, polluting mode of transport. If you are in need of break from your daily routine, discover and travel to new places within your local or nearby areas. As well as saving time and potentially money, staycations save a significant amount of greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere.

Imogen - Top

8.      Unplug, go outside and enjoy the sunshine

A digital detox is proven to improve sleep, decrease stress/anxiety levels and enhance cognitive functions. As well as improving your mental health and supplementing you with vitamin D, switching off and unplugging technology will reduce energy consumption.

The Problem With Online Shopping

The State of Sustainable Fashion: What is the Reality Behind the Eco Collections?
Image from: Retviews

With lockdown restrictions still going strong everywhere around the world and clothing stores being closed more and more people are turning to online shopping. It can be a whole lot of fun - you get to buy clothes without ever getting up from the couch and dream of where you'll be wearing them once we're free to travel again. However, many do not realise the massive impact their orders have on the environment. Your new pair of jeans or a cute bag play a part in the huge amount of plastic and leftover fabrics that end up in the ocean and landfills. Each online order has to be properly packaged in order for it to not get damaged during shipping. For that the easiest option for brands is to use plastic. Now imagine hundreds of thousands of orders from shoppers all over the world, each of them being sent out in plastic packaging. Not to mention the leftover fabrics that are thrown out instead of being used for new items! At Madia & Matilda we always work to become more environmentally friendly - from using recycled packaging to offering the option of carbon neutral delivery. We also use sustainable fibers in our clothing and make sure that all leftover fabrics get reused. Every step of our clothing making process is thoroughly thought about! Check out our collections and help out the environment!
